Description: Boricua Kids is a bilingual site to teach children about Puerto Rico and its culture. The site appears to be aimed at 8-12 years olds. The page provides a brief history of the island, a brief introduction to the tainos, a native group from the island, and an explanation of how Puerto Rico became a part of the United States. In addition to its clear, concise descriptions of the island's history, the page also makes many cultural aspects of Puerto Rico seem more alive. For example, the cultural sections include foods (with recipes!); children's songs; pages to color; an explanation of how Puerto Ricans celebrate their type of Christmas; information about the island's national symbol (coquí, a frog); and el Yunque, the national forest on the island. Instructors will also find this a great site, as there is a special section of lesson plans. Lessons come with the actual plans, handouts, quizzes, and activities for the classroom. There is also a section of bilingual poetry that could be incorporated into a bilingual classroom. Overall, this is a fabulous site full of information on Puerto Rico. It is user-friendly and colorful, making it enjoyable to use and read. |
